    He'll probably get service there, but the roaming and long distance calls could cost a small fortune. Some carriers have a minimum charge of $3 or more just to place an international call, then 60 cents or more per minute. That may not sound like much, but it adds up fast. At those rates a 20 minute call would cost $15. Try not to make too many calls because the bill could easily run into the hundreds.

The last time I went home to Jamaica they had Digitel. Almost everyone there had a cell phone. I don't remember if the phone that I bought with me from the states worked. But I was able to use a family member's phone with phone cards and call anywhere in the world.

If roaming is enabled through his cellular provider, you will be able to get though to him. The two most popular networks are digicel and LIME.

yep.i live in Jamaica so i know....but he'll be roaming, which is pretty expensive, There is Digicel, Lime and Claro. The best is Digicel, he'll need to buy cards, which have like phone credit on them. But like i said roaming is expensive, so might i suggest he get the $1000 phone card.
