How can I become a teacher in Jamaica?

  • Hi I am a New York State certified special education and general education teacher with dual masters degree and I would love to move back to Jamaica and become a teacher. Can some please offer me tips and ideas on how to go about obtaining a teaching position in Jamaica particularly in Westmoreland. Do they even hire teachers from abroad in Jamaica? Help me please!!

    Of course you want to teach ENGILSH becaue Amerikans ALWAYS want to teach ENGLISH. And WHY JAMAICA? There are over 36 really NICE islands to go to if you want to teach, but you won't seen them advertised on AmeriKan TV so you may not even know about them. Jamaica is like most of the Caribbean islands.. they aren't real big on SPECIAL EDUCTION so your specialty will be of little use to you. To get a job as a teacher in ANY FOREIGN COUNTRY you have to work through their department or agency that deals with professional licenses and, I can tell you from my own personal experience, YOU HAVE TO DO IT IN PERSON... you will need copies of all your trancripts and degrees. Of course you need to be Jamaican to work for a salary in Jamaica. It helps if you're also a Christian because many Jamaican schools are church sponsored. Sav-la-mar High School, for example, is sponsored by the Adventist Church. Bigger schools may have industrial partners and sponsors. Schools really need qualified teachers! Completion levels in some specialties (e.g. maths) tend to be quite low. Also, the youths need lots of help with sports because Jamaica is sports-crazy, and greatly benefits from good coaching. If you're not a Jamaican citizen, you might look for ways to volunteer through missionary organizations.
