I am going on a cruise in June with Carnival and have questions about tiping - since we pre-paid our tips..?
-
While I am on the cruise, am I expected to tip more or since I pre-paid the tips - is everything taken care of? We pre-paid alot on tips for a 7 day cruise. When you pre-pay tips in advance - what all does this cover? Please give feedback.

Answer:
When you pre-tip it will cover most of the tips. That is for the main people that help you. Including the maid, and your servers. You may want to call Carnival to see what exactly was included as far as who's tip is covered. They will be able to tell you. But this does include tips for the people that you will see most often. At the end they will give you a card that you hand to your waiter, leave in the room, etc. This way you know you have left the standard tip and don't have to worry about underpaying. Now, if you get good service, I always like to tip more. It's not required. But I found that most of the time the people deserve more than what I have given them with pre-tips because they worked so hard. So you can slip a few extra 20's or whatever into the envelope you give them. Another idea is phone cards. I like to give phone cards so they don't have to use their own money to call home. Finally, the tips will not be included for room service and any other services you use, like the spa. Since they don't know if you will use these services, they don't include the tip for these individuals. I believe that the standard tip for room service is only like $1 to $2 per person in the room, so it's not that bad. If you use rooms service you should always leave a tip. As with anything else you might use. I think this pretty much covers everything. Hope this helps!

You already paid tips. The reason the cruise ships do that is so that you don't feel pressured to tip. HOWEVER, I think it is actually expected to tip your waiter on the last night of the cruise in the formal dining room. edit: to be more clear, it is taken care of with that and you don't have to give out any more tips.

Your prepaid tips will covers the waiter, bus person/assistant waiter, your room stewart & assistant and the Matr'd in the dining room. Usually cruise ship add an automatic gratuity to any drinks you order which you must pay for like alcoholic beverages(beer, wine, etc) and name brand sodas. Usually coffee, tea, milk, juices are free. If you call a waiter and order a drink in a bar, dining room, show, the bill will include a tip already. You don't need to carry ANY cash in your pocket onship, except for the casino.

what's covered when you pre pay doesnt actually cover your room steward, maitre d, etc. They will actually provide envelopes for you to offer 'additional consideration' for these folks. It's almost like a custom that on the last night of the cruise, they will formally suggest (request) that you provide additional comp for these folks. I've always been happy to provide a tip, especially when you don't have hassles with things missing from your cabin or problems with service. This is what I generally base my tipping on at the last night. Have a great trip by the way.
