Will copies of birth certificates suffice to travel by airplane without state issued ID's?

Do my wife and I need passports to travel from US to Jamaica, or will our birth certificates suffice?

  • Answer:

Although it is suggested that U.S. citizens traveling to Jamaica carry a passport to facilitate immigration procedures upon departure from the U.S., it is not necessary for U.S. citizens to have a passport to enter Jamaica as a tourist. U.S. citizens traveling as tourists to Jamaica require either a passport or a certified U.S. birth certificate and current government-issued photo identification. U.S. Citizens who are traveling to Jamaica for work purposes or for an extended period of time must have a valid U.S. passport and a visa issued by the Jamaican Embassy or a Jamaican Consulate. For the most current entry/exit requirements, visit the Embassy of Jamaica's Web site at http://www.congenjamaica-ny.org, or the U.S. State Department's Web site at http://travel.state.gov/travel/jamaica.html.

As a business traveler, the best advise is when traveling outside your own country have a passport or in some cases a visa. Passport is the best form of identification.

The problem is not just traveling to Jamaica, but also getting back into the U.S. when you get back. I don't know what visa requirements Jamaica has, but the U.S. will certainly want proof of citizenship to let you back in. A passport is the surest way to provide proof of citizenship.

You will need to get passports. Since Jamaica is not part of the USA, it's a international provance. Have fun on your trip
