Has anyone got any advice as to obtaining residency for a Canadian in the Dominican Republic.?
-
I would like to retire soon and want to spend time away from th e cold and taxes of Canada. I have heard that you can obtain permanent residency and even citizenship in the Dominican Republic. Has anyone got any experience or advice with this.

Answer:
I first got my residency then in 2005 got my citizenship. I used a attorney Dolly Cabrera in Santiago. At the time charged 800 for residency tempory and 800 for residency permanent. I then paid 1000 for citizenship which took longer but I also got my Dominican Passport at the same time. [email protected] She speaks English and holds your hand through the entire process. I felt like a puppy on a leash as she took me all through the capital getting everything done. She is also married to a Canadian. The prices are a bit higher now I suppose. It is about 10 years on the residency and 4 years on the citizenship but she is the lowest cost and the most efficient of all the attorneys I have heard about through people I have met here.

Residency is still very easy to obtain for the Dominican Republic and many foreigners, particularly Canadians have chosen to retire there. For me and thousands of other foreigners the country is an absolute paradise however it is not for everybody and a few vacations does not prepare you for the realities of living there. Before investing in your dream retirement home I strongly urge you to rent a place and try it out for at least 6 months.

Like Glynn said, I'd recommend you to first rent for a while and feel it out prior to purchasing. There are two different types of residencies to which you could apply as a foreign retiree or as a person receiving a fixed income from abroad: you could apply through the regular residency process or through the fast-track one which is specially designed for retirees. If you do not speak Spanish I'd suggest you to hire the services of an experienced immigration law firm such as Guzman Ariza (www.drlawyer.com). They've been in business for quite a while. For more info go to their residency article below or do a search/post on dr1.com, which is the largest expat english-speaking forum about the DR.
