What To Do In Puerto Plata?

What is Puerto Plata like?

  • I am looking to go to Puerto Plata in the middle of May but I have heard that compared to Punta Cana and Cuba, the beaches are wavy rocky and Puerto Plata is really windy. Has anyone been that knows what its like there???

MICHELLE, Hi there. I'm not sure where you are and what you consider windy. If you are planning to stay in a resort perhaps Punta Cana is your best choice. I know Puerto Plata (been there 4 times) and the really cool thing is that there are lots of things to do in the region. Lots of sailing, wind-surfing, nice restaurants, excursions and so on. The town of Punta Cana is way too small and there aren't many things to do as compared to Puerto Plata. Don't worry about the water and the wind. It is the Dominican Republic!! It's an awesome place to visit! You will fall in love with the people and the country!!! As for Cuba, if you plan to stay in a resort I would rather go to the DR. I hope this helps! Cheers! JV

Puerto Plata isn't as pretty as Punta Cana. The water isn't the clear blue kind with white sand. And that's just the part you can see...I'm sure the water isn't very clean. The beaches are really close to a major city so it's gotta be more contaminated. Plus there's no cool nature stuff to see right there in Puerto Plata. You should look into Samana instead, it's really pretty but not super touristy/all-inclusive dominated like Puerto Plata. Don't know anything about Cuba.

Punta Cana sucks. Nice beach and thats all. In Puerto Plata at least there are some things to do other than the cheesy tours. Now I am not big on Puerto Plata either and would recommend Cabarete as a happening place to visit. Young sports minded crowd that plays all day and parties all night on the beach at the different clubs. Way different than any other place in this country. If you insist on Puerto Plata visit the Malecon which is just redone and done nicely, the teleferico which is a trolly that goes up Mt Isabella and you feel like you are on the top of the world (bring the camera) Confressi Ocean World, a day trip to Sosua and Cabarete.
