Has anyone retired in the Dominican Republic and obtained residency there?
-
I am a Canadian and would like to retire soon. I am looking for somewhere that is safe, stable, warm and will not tax me to death. I have heard that it is possible to obtain residency and even citizenship in the Dominican Republic. If anyone has experience or words of advice on this it would be helpful. Can anyone recommend a reputable agency to assist with this. Thanks

Answer:
I agree with Jazzpaging answer, just take contact and always ask for the price to pay, because many lawyers ask to much money..

I answered this in another question but here it goes again. You will need a attorney to help you with this. I used Dolly Cabrera from Santiago. Fast , efficient and quick in all aspects. She was also charging very little compared to others I spoke to and what others pay in my networking. you already have good answers but i just wanted to say that a little community in Puerto Plata called costambar is a very nice place to retire... i lived there a long time and moved out because the road is really bad.. but the reason i tell you its a good community is because its full of retired americans, brittish and canadians... so if you dont speak the language its the right place to live in... real estate is cheap, theres a nice supermarket, youre right on the beach, electricity is a problem in the whole country but you buy an inverter like everyone else here, and will be ok for up to 10 hours of no power... lots of little restaurants and bars... thats just my idea... i see costambar as a great place for tourists to reside and retire... theres no tax on land in this country, only a transfer tax, and if you end up buying something buy a house, not a condo because you will have condo fees and that can really bite into your retirement fund!

There are no immigration agencies per se in the DR. Most foreigners either do it themselves (if they speak Spanish or have someone close that does) or hire the services of an immigration attorney. There are actually three different types of residencies through which you could apply as a foreign retiree or as a foreign individual receiving a fixed income from abroad: a. regular residency process, b. fast-track one which is specially designed for retirees or c. the residency through investment program. I'd suggest you to hire the services of an experienced immigration law firm such as Guzman Ariza (www.drlawyer.com). They've been in business for quite a while and have earned a well-respected reputation amongst foreigners living in the DR. For more info on the subject go to their website's residency section below or do a search/post on dr1.com, the largest expat English-speaking forum about the DR.
