What is the Cost of living in Puerto Plata?
-
I will be moving to Puerto Plata to be close to my husbands family, and I have no clue what life will be like. I am trying to prepare mentally and financially, does anyone have advice for me? What is the average cost of living per month, we will be renting. How can I go about finding a decent apartment close to town? All your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
If your husband's family is from the area, they will be able to assist you with your needs. Just follow their advice. Any help from third parties will be strictly driven by money so you will end up paying for their commission. Your in-laws will know people in the area so they'll find you a reasonably priced accommodation that's in convenient location. They will also show you where it's best to go shopping for groceries and where to go party if you feel like. There is no one else who can give you better and unbiased advise than family. People who make their living "helping" foreigners (such as myself or that other guy who posted already) will only help you if there is something in it for them. Keep that in mind. Keep that in mind and your cost of living will be fine. When it comes to cost of living itself – it won’t be that significantly lower than in the US or Canada. Unlike in the US, you may be required to pay two or three months worth of deposit, provided you have a local guarantor (which it looks like you do – in laws). Otherwise it could be six months of advance rent. You can find inexpensive housing in Puerto Plata, however decent quality accommodation is fairly expensive. Prices for groceries are comparable to the US, however you can find many inexpensive food places (such as stands by the road selling grilled fish) all over so careful planning can save up. Clothes are reasonably inexpensive and even recognizeable brands can be had at low prices.

I live in Puerto Plata for many years. The average cost of living depends on your lifestyle and the place where you want to rent a apartment. In the old part of town (near central park) you will pay less than in Ballardo or Torre Alto for example. The difference is also in if you rent with or without furniture. Please send me your mail to [email protected], and I will gladly help find what you are looking for.
