I am from the US and want to relocte to Dominican Republic. How do I get a job at a resort?
-
I have been researching on how to relocate to the Dominican Republic within the next few months. I currently live in the US, I have a degree in Communications, 5 years experience in Property Management, and 10 years in the hospitality industry. Is it possible to get a job at a resort in Punta Cana? I know basic Spanish but I do not speak fluent spanish. Any information would be helpful.

Answer:
Yes you probably can. AFTER you become FLUENT in Spanish because any of those hospitality jobs REQUIRE fluency in the language.. which is why they almost always go to LOCALS. Anyway, . here is how it works.. you MUST be HIRED while you are in the US and then the hotel or motel company would have to apply to the Dominican Republic government for a WORK VISA for you by swearing they can not find anyone from the DR that can do the job you are applying for. You claim to be "DOING RESEARCH" so Is there some reason you have not gone to the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IMMIGRATION web site and READ what they tell you on there. I live in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, so I think I can answer your question. A degree in Communications, 5 years experience in Property Management and 10 years in the Hospitality Industry means nothing. So just toss that out the window and start from ground zero. Two things will get you a job here: 1. Who you know. 2. The more fluent languages you speak the better. Also, when you get a job here in a resort, expect to work about 70+ hours per week and make about $300 USD per month. Good luck!

Unless you are multi-lingual with in demand talents or qualifications forget it. Hundreds of people try the same thing every year and unless you have enough money behind you to last several months, it is almost impossible to find a decent job. Gringos who own businesses hire friends who have paid their dues. without contacts your chances of finding anything decent are practically nil. That being said, if you do go be careful, don't trust anyone, some people will promise you the moon but have ulterior motives.

If you've been doing research on relocating to DR, then you probably already know that it's going to be very difficult to get a work visa there. I assume you've already checked the DR government website for info on immigration....
