Will my canadian debit card work in cuba?

How can I use my debit card in Cuba - CAN I use my debit card in Cuba?

  • I've heard that atm's in Cuba don't let you withdraw either convertibles or pestos using a foreign debit card. My card is issued in the UK, and I'm wondering how the hell I am to procure money if I can't use an atm? Any responses are greatly appreciated, cheers!

  • Answer:

ATMs work for Visa cards. Banks and Cadecas accept Visa and Mastercard. ATMs are not widespread in the resort areas - most people get their cash over the counter. If you are going to an all-inclusive, you are not going to need that much cash, anyway - many just take what they need with them. If you are not staying in an all-inclusive, you need to do more research before you go ! All of those give CUC. Some also give CUP to certain Cuban cards (not foreign cards).

I wouldn't use my cash point (ATM) card in Cuba, we always bring a couple of hundred Canadian dollars and exchange them at the hotel for CUC for spending money and tips. When we go on excursions from the hotel we use a credit card to pay for them, they are fine as long as they aren't issued by an American bank. My card is issued by an American bank but my card number identifies it as issued in Canada. Also depending on where you are going there may not be a cash point close at hand. Bring your sterling and exchange it as you need it at the bureau de change at the hotel or at the airport for CUC. BTW I've been to Cuba 4 times and have seen 2 cash points one in Matanzas and the other in Varadero they are not exactly everywhere as they are in Canada and the UK. have a good time and safe home.

I went there last year and I think I saw 1 cashpoint in Havana. Logic would make you wonder if their standard banking system can issue convertibles but it may be that cards don't exist for locals. It is probably easier just to bring cash and change it. If you stay at a resort you probably won't need much cash anyway. I think the charges on debit cards might be quite steep - worth asking your card issuer. Some charge you a minimum fee and others a %. It is an interesting place to visit.
