How do I go to Cuba from the US?

I am a US Citizen. Will I encounter any problems back home if I go to Cuba?

  • I am a US Citizen on holiday in Europe. Before I go back to USA in March, I will go to Mexico at the end of February. I have been looking at several different flight options, and one of the cheapest and most convenient is one from Brussels to Cancun, but this flight includes a stopover at Varadero (VRA) airport in Cuba. I have been told that as an American, the Cuban authorities would not stamp my passport if I asked them not to. I will return to USA from Mexico. Even though I will not be returning home directly from Cuba, will I encounter any problems if the American authorities find out that I have been to Cuba, i.e. if I did have a stamp from Cuba on my passport? I need to know before I waste any money on a plane ticket...

  • Answer:

the Cuban Immigration gives you a little yellow card with the stamps on it and then takes it back when you leave. (leave the card in your passport and carry your passport ON you; you will play Hell iff you do not have this card come time to go...) If its just a stopover, you probably will be stuck in the Transit lounge at the Airport. But if it doesn't cost much have a couple day layover -> you will not regret it! A wonderful, beautiful country with friendly helpful people. You(like myself) will want to go back! Remember to state that you DID NOT spend any money there if asked upon your return to the US;that is the BIG sticking point Customs has an office called OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) that takes a keen intrest in that single point.

This information will help you with your Cuban travels. Thousands of Cubans go every year without any problems. Just be sure not to leave any paper trails or bring back 'Cuban' souvenirs. Mexican souvenirs are very similar, but just as long as nothing detects 'Cuba'. You should be ok. If it is just a stop over. Do not leave the airport! Just to change flights. But remember if any thing happens while there. You are technically in the country illegally! The American government can not help you! Do not buy anything at the duty free shop! Low profile! Your stay!

The Cuban authorities will not stamp your passport. Many thousands of US citizens visit Cuba every month for significant time - not just a stop-over - without problems on returning. Don't buy any rum or cigars whilst there.

Under U.S. law, it is not illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba. It is illegal to spend money in Cuba or import Cuban products. Cuban customs doesn't stamp passports anyway. They issue tourist cards, but since you're just connecting in Cuba, you won't even need to get a tourist card. Don't worry about it. You'll be fine.

Cuba won't stamp your passport if you request it, so U.S. authorities will not know you've been there just by looking at your passport.
