How do I go to Cuba from the US?

I am Brazilian and US citizen.. Live w/ cuban girlfriend? Can I go to cuba w/ Brazil passaport?

  • If married to her I learned I could go to Cuba w/o problems. I was also told that with the recent change of the law, if I show that I live with a cuban national (not married), I can also go to cuba w/o problems????? Comments?

Shelley L provided some inaccurate information. Cuba's economy depends on tourism. They welcome any tourist s tourists are source of revenue. That includes Americans. They actually really like Americans and will let them in without discrimination of any sort, provided they are not trying to do anything illegal, like smuggle drugs in or something equally stupid (which would be perceived as illegal by other customs officials as well). To get back to your question - you can travel to Cuba with Brazilian passport without problems. All you need to do is to purchase a Tourist Card, which serves as Cuban tourist visa. If you fly to Cuba via Canada, your Tourist Card will be included in the price of plane ticket. Otherwise you may need to pay for it extra, which I think is around $25 or so (as Canadian, I'm not sure, we always get it included and also get longer stay because Canada is main source of tourism revenue for Cuba). Obviously, you will have to travel via a third country as there are no straight flights to Cuba from the USA. Going via Canada is one option, Mexico or Bahamas (as well as other countries) are fine as well, but I have heard good things about going via Jamaica - Americans I have met in Cuba say it is possible to buy cheap plane tickets to Cuba from Jamaica and they have also no issues selling you a ticket "under the table" so that there are no records of you buying one. Cuban officials don't stamp passports so when you are returning to the USA, there will be no indication that you previously visited Cuba (which may prevent needless questions from American authorities). As I had mentioned, Cubans use Tourist Cards, which is an actual card on which you fill in your details and that serves as tourist visa. Americans may not know you have been to Cuba, unless you tell them. You can take a look what a Tourist Card looks like and get more info on http://www.cubatourism.ca/usa-cuba/travel-cuba-cuban-visa-problems-usa/

As you say - if your girlfriend is a US resident, she can travel to Cuba whenever she likes. As you live with her, you are included and so can travel with her, legally under US law. Cuba isn't worried - all you need is a Cuban tourist card. If you travel outside the OFAC regulations, that is against US laws, whether you use your Brazilian passport on not.

You can go as a brazilian national.. But not as a US citizen. You would have to travel and get whatever visas are necessary as a brazilian. And travel thru mexico or canada would be the safest. As an american, living with a cuban national doesn't give you any rights to travel to cuba.
