How does America have a prison in Cuba, when Americans arent allowed to go to Cuba?
-
Why is America allowed to have Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist's and prisoners of war in Cuba, if Cuba doesn't even allow Americans into Cuba? I know that Americans can fly from Mexico or Canada to Cuba, but not straight from America. My husband says its because Cuba doesn't like Americans, so why do they let us have a prison there?

Answer:
The US has kept a military base at Guantanamo since the Spanish were defeated 110 years ago. Cuba hasn't really had much choice in that matter. When Castro took over Cuba, in 1959, he couldn't really do much about the base (though it is said he stopped cashing the rental cheques). The US prohibits its citizens from travelling to Cuba without permission - this is widely seen as a cold war leftover, which won't go away because of the influence of Cuban expats in Florida politics. The Cuban authorities love to receive visitors from the US and is looking forward to the day that the travel ban is relaxed.

Because your husband is ill-informed. You can't fly directly to Cuba because the U.S. EMBARGO ON CUBA. It isn't CUBA'S choice, it is the U.S.'s choice. To be fair Cuba isn't really a big fan of the U.S. either. We rent out the prison there.

I've always thought that the American government , bribed and frightened by the Cuban gangsters thrown out by Castro , has forbidden direct flights to Cuba. It is not the other way round. Checkout Wikipedia to find the history. Just the usual colonialism from powerful governments taking what they want from the weak.

Hola. Wow, sad really when young Americans aren't even aware of their own history. Americans ARE allowed into Cuba, but they have to have special permissions to enter. Lots of family members leave on flights daily from Florida. It's your country that doesn't allow travel in and out of Cuba without hefty fines!!. If you are caught returning from Cuba or have a Cuba stamp in your passport your American government will detain you, jail you, fine you, etc etc. As far as Americans having prisons in foreign countries, there are hundreds of them all over the world. What about those ones?

Yeah, it's dumb. Cuba doesn't have any choice about Guantanamo Bay or about people from the U.S. traveling to Cuba. Your husband's wrong--Cubans would love to have people from the U.S. visit (and bring their tourist money!!) but the U.S. doesn't let most people go there (they do it by not allowing U.S. money to be spent there without a special permit). And I have no clue how we justify keeping a prison there after totally screwing over the Cuban people. "Hey, we hate you so we're not going to let any of our money go to you. But would you mind us keeping all the people we don't want in our country in your backyard? 'kay thanks!"

The United States has a naval base at Guantanamo Bay. The base was started over 100 years ago, following the Spanish-American war.

Hello ! Welcome to Earth The USA made an agreement with Cuba to lease that territory when Cuba was ruled by the USA, between 1899 and 1902

Because America owns that property.

America's embargo doesn't allow any funds to transfer to cuba. even companies that do business around the world, as long as they do business with america, they're not allowed to do business with cuba. it's all an economic way of strangeling cuba out of a dictatorship. there's multiple acts that congress put in place to get to where we're at now. wikipedia has all that jazz on it, jus type in cuban embargo, and im sure all details outlining the economic starvation of cuba will be there. the naval base has been there 100+ years, and we wont leave for reasons like the '63 cuban missile crisis, and to make sure we keep tabs on cuba (who decades ago was suspected of crimes against humanity like saddam hussein). the prison is there because people who commit crimes against our country as a whole (like treason, terrorism, crimes against humanity, etc...) are tried and sentenced there. they're not garaunteed our constitutional rights so military tribunal can sentence criminals as they see fit (ie the 9/11 bombers).
