Where to get this phone in canada?

Calling a CDN cell phone, in Cuba, from Canada? Or, get a Cubacel phone?

• My Cuban bf and I are trying to find a more economical way of keeping in touch. As it is, we take turns calling each other twice a week, but it is getting quite costly. Even text messages are a lot, at 0.25 for me and 1CUC for him, each. My solution is to either buy a SIM card from a CDN phone company for use in his Cubacel phone, or for me to buy a Cubacel phone for use in Canada (if it is even possible). Payment options are me paying his CDN phone bill here, or him paying the 10CUC bill there (not including roaming charges). He works in tourism, so can easily afford this, but I'm guessing roaming will be an issue either way? Any suggestions would be awesome :)

  I would guess that a Canadian SIM card in Cuba would work out cheapest per minute - but the only way to be sure is to get the prices from the Canadian phone companies and compare to the cost of Cubacel roaming. (Also - might he use the phone more if he is not paying the bill ?) You can send text messages cheaper than that by using a website like www.ipipi.com - occasionally it has problems but most of the time it is fine. I assume he doesn't have easy internet access or that would be be a better option for him.
