What to do in Nassau, Bahamas?

What to see and do while in Nassau Bahamas?

  • My husband and I are taking a needed vacation. We are both 30 years old and will be going to Nassau at the end of January. We are staying at a resort on Cable Beach. After booking our flight and hotel, and excitedly telling our family and friends, we heard many negative comments about Nassau. Does anyone have tips on what to see and do that are both safe and cost effective? We were advised to not leave the resort and if we did, not to take a taxi (too expensive) and not to drive or walk alone (safety reasons). Also, my husband is a big fan of trying new foods. Any tips on good places to eat?

  • Answer:

What you described sounds like Baltimore, or Trenton New Jersey, not Nassau. Nassau is a safe place to be, and walk around. You can take the local bus, that stops out side of the resort, to go downtown ( about 3 miles ) and shop at the stores on Bay street, the main street in the city, right by the cruise ship docks. Remember that the island that Nassau is located on ( New Providence ) is only 24 miles long and 7 miles across. Bay Street has some of the best "designer stores " that there are any where, Rolex, Armani, Hugo Boss, and Channel, all with NO TAX on the items. A must see is " Atlantis Resort " located on Paradise Island, just across the bridge from the main part of Nassau. It is HUGE, with many things to do and see. Bahamians are friendly, and they know that "visitors" like you are the main source of THEIR employment. 75 percent of the Bahamas national economy is based on tourism, so they are not going to give you bad service, or treat you with any type of disrespect. The Bahamian dollar is on a par with the US dollar, so you can spend either currency in Nassau. Drive on the left, watch for cars, and have fun. It is NOT the USA, and the experience will be good, if you bring your open mind and are prepared to LEARN about a new country and it's customs and life style. Have fun. Jim B, Toronto.
