When should I start planning road trip?

Canadian Road Trip?!?

  • So ever since our freshman year of high school, my friends and I have had this idea of going on a road trip to Canada when we're all eighteen. As you've probably assumed, for alcohol. Most of us are getting to that age now, so we figured that we should start planning as this is going to cost us quite a deal of money. We live in Michigan and want to go to the closest province with a minimum drinking age of eighteen years old. When we get to said province, we're not sure where we should go or what we should do. Tourist sites? Clubbing? Cocaine and strippers with Charlie Sheen [well... maybe not]? Also, just to get a more broad opinion, we were wondering if anyone here on the Interwebs have any legal or moral objections to this. I certainly don't, but just to make sure we have all of our bases covered, we wanted to open this idea to the general public for consideration. And when I say general public, I mean the fine and knowledgeable people of Yahoo! Answers. So where should we go? What specifically do you think we should do when we get there? And is there any reason to not go through with this fantastically brilliant idea?

  • Answer:

From Michigan the closest province with a drinking age of 18 is Quebec; it's about a 10 hour drive (without stopping) from Detroit to Montreal. Your other choices are Alberta and Manitoba, both are a much longer drive. And Manitoba's kind of hole; you'll have more fun in Montreal. It's got a ton of everything there, and even though it's in french-speaking Quebec, much of Montreal is bilingual so just knowing English is fine.

There are 3 provinces with an 18 drinking age: Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec. It looks like Quebec is the closest one of these, although the part of Quebec will depend on where in Michigan you are. What you do there will depend a lot on where you end up. If you take the northern route, and make a beeline to the nearest town with an 18 age (Temiscaming), there isn't much there! It has about 2600 people, 3/4 of whom speak French. There will be a few bars, but, likely no nightclubs or anything like that. If you go further, you can head for Ottawa (Canada's capital), which is a nice place to visit, and right across the river is Gatineau, and the Hull Secteur (once the city of Hull), which is where Ottawa goes to party. Or, head for Montreal, a very large city, with as much to see, and do as you can handle, and many places to see all sorts of things.... ;) So, if you are party minded, I might suggest Montreal. IF plain drinking is all you are after, another place will do. If you want to be tourists, and see other stuff, and maybe enjoy a drink or two in the evening, then Gatineau, or Montreal would be fine. That, BTW, is what I recommend; drinking on it's own sounds neat when you are young, but, it actually gets pretty boring, pretty quickly.

hahaha. Right on. Well, Quebec is probably the closest province to you that has a minimum drinking age of 18. Montreal is a crazy party town. Go out one night in Montreal, you'll have the whole trip set out man..
