Minimum age for crossing Canada US Border?

Questions about crossing the border to Canada?

  • My friends mother passed away in the states, and wanted her ashes spread in the cemetary where her mother is buried in Canada. My friends brother and sister said that they would carry out her final wishes, and now we are getting some weird stories, and he would like some answers. The 2 different stories are this... they went to Canada, found the Grandmothers grave and spread the mom's ashes. The 2nd story is this... they began to travel to Canada and they began to argue, so when they got to the border they left the ashes at the border and a uncle that lives in Canada came to the border, picked up the ashes and spread them. The Uncle passed away shortly after this so we can't get answers from him. They would have crossed the border at or near New York, New Jersey as they live in that area. The cemetary is in Stephenville Newfoundland, and the uncle lives in Nova Scotia. So we have a couple questions -Can you cross the border without a passport? -Can you transport human remains across the border? -Can you leave a package at the border and have them hold it until someone else comes to pick up the package? Do you find the story(s) fishy?

  • Answer:

    1. you need a passport to enter Canada. 2. No, but it wouldn't be a problem taking ashes over the border (if you didn't tell the border guards) 3. No, you cannot leave a package at the border for someone to come pick up. You could ask how long it took them to go there (going to Newfoundland would take a considerable amount of time). Also ask them thing's about the trip like what Canada looked like etc etc. As far as the second story goes, that's not true because packages cannot be left at the border to be picked up, and not many people would drive over 12 hours to the New York border from Nova Scotia (i live in NS and it is not a drive you do in a day and come back, 2 days at least would be needed).

Other answers

1. Technically, no, but you do need a passport to get back into the USA. This is US law. 2. Should not be a problem. 3. No. There is no place for things like that. Even fishier though: the New York/New Jersey area is a LONG way from Newfoundland! To drive from Nova Scotia to probably Montreal or so would be a couple day drive by itself. From there to Stephenville would be at least 4 days, maybe 5 (there is a long ferry ride to get to Newfoundland). And then back: this is a good 9 days of driving. Someone would do that just to spread some ashes? Maybe....
