How do the French celebrate Bastille Day?

Do French Canadians celebrate Bastille Day -(France's equivalent of Independence Day)?

  • Today, July 14, 2009 is the 220th!!!!! Anniversary of the Liberation of France by the peasants against the aristocracy! 99% of the Wealth was in the hands of 1% of the people. This was more fanatical corporate capitalism than the USA under Bush. And then the peasants charged the Bastille and that moment of the Declaration of Man.......that moment when utopia and euphoria transcended onto the Streets of Paris...for a moment in time.... It was as if for France, the moment of ultimate utopia arrived!!!! The power was in the hands of the have-nots! And now, isn't there a passion for this among Quebeckers and French Canadiens?

  • Answer:

Bastille Day is not generally celebrated by Quebecers. I am not sure where your other responder got their information. It is not a provincial holiday, even for government workers. The only people who may recognize that holiday here are former citizens of France now living in Quebec. In Quebec, the main holiday for French celebration is "La Fete Nationale" on June 24th, which used to be called "Journee St. Jean Baptiste" until recently, when the government decided to create a new organization that handles the celebrations (Mouvement Nationale du Quebec)
