OK... i am a 3d animator and im from Costa Rica... im moving to Canada.. I need some help to start with some simple things, like which place is better Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, etc... Where are the best jobs in the Visual Art area (3d animation, video games, films, etc...) and also what are some considerations i should have before arrival... Is it better in the US or Canada... I love Canada since years ago... but i also like some things in the US, but there are some that I dont really like..... Whats your opinion?

Answer:
Don't even try thinking about the USA. You know, more and more Americans are running up to Canada because of how bad the US is getting and the life there isn't nearly as good as Canada is. Vancouver is the best place, but Toronto has more Job opportunities.

Have you got your application in for permission to work in Canada? It's going to take years so you should start plannig and applying soon.

I know Toronto has a lot of jobs in film, and I think Calgary does too. I think Calgary is generally the best place for employment, but houses are really expensive. Also, Toronto goes from -20 in the winter to 35 in the summer (those are both the extremes), and Calgary is more like -35 to 30. Those are Celsius. Toronto is much more humid than Calgary though. Calgary has nicer recreational centres and is a nicer city than Toronto overall in my opinion. That's all I can think of, unfortunately I don't know much about Vancouver other than that the temperature is more like -2 to 25 and there is a larger asian population. I hope that helps.

Vancouver has a fair amount of animation and film work. I believe Disney is about to build a new animation studio there. Also, being from Costa Rica you might find Vancouver's weather a little easier to take than the very cold weather you get in other parts of Canada. It can rain a lot in winter and the summer doesn't get really hot, but overall it's warmer than the other 2 cities and there isn't much snow. However, Vancouver is a fairly expensive city to live in by Canadian standards because of the cost of housing.

Sorry but you can't just move to Canada like that. You need to see if you qualify to immigrate here. Then, you need to apply, wait the hugely long time, get all the paperwork that immigration officials will ask from you and then see if you are accepted first. Just wanting to come to Canada will not be enough so I wouldn't start asking about where the best place(s) would be to move to. As I said, you must qualify to immigrate first. Did you know that we are in the midst of a serious recession? We have hundreds of thousands of Canadians who have lost their jobs already and I'm sure more than a few of them are 3D animators. Please just stay where you are for the time being and understand that it isn't that you yourself would not be welcome but that now is just not the right time to try moving.

Move to Toronto, that is the hub for film, animation, video game development, and designers. I am in my last year of design school, I will most likely move there too, at least for a few years, until I have a client base strong enough to move somewhere else.
