Do us citizens need a passport to visit canada,traveling by car?

  • the law was suppose to change june 1 2009. have never been to canada live only 3 hours away, my family would need 3 passports if true ty for any helpful knowledge

    The law DID changeJune 1,2009. see site below to read it for yourself. Please note, that children 15 and younger do not need a passport to travel to and from Canada by land only. they may use their birth certificates. See 2nd site for all passport application info.

The law that changed on June 1 requires that anyone entering the US by car will need a passport. You still don't need a passport to enter Canada from the US, just proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, but when you re-enter the US you will definitely need passports for everyone.

You need either a passport, a NEXUS card, or an enhanced drivers license/EDL (not a normal driver's license). Drivers license & birth certificate no longer qualify.
