Road trip to Canada. Everything I'll need to know?
-
My friends and I are planning a road trip to Canada for May. We are all between the ages of 20-25 and would like to know which part we should stay in. It has to have good nightlife. I heard that Vancouver in British Columbia is cool, but would like more opinions. Also, would a passport and ID be acceptable to cross the border? Or would I need any other paper work? I am pretty much clueless since I've never been to Canada so all information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think to start off with you would need to determine how much time you have in Canada, and how long it will take to get there. Vancouver is very popular, but it is all the way on the western coast of Canada. If you are heading up from the western coast of the United States, then that is a great place to be heading to. If you are from the west coast, then you can also travel to Vancouver Island via ferry, or you could travel inland from Vancouver to see the rocky mountains which have gorgeous views, swim in natural hot springs, and do hiking... or even maybe some skiing/snowboarding in May! If you are heading out from the east of the United States, or even from central United States, then Montreal is a very popular place to go, especially for a group your age. There are a lot of interesting sights in Montreal, but it is also probably the most vibrant city in Canada that has the most active nightlife. I would recommend that you take a look at the two sources I have listed below. One is travel information on Canada, and the other is google maps so you can calculate out driving times. As Canada is such a large country, it can take a very long time to drive between places... for example Vancouver to Montreal would be about 52 hours of driving. The last link I have provided is to the Government of Canada's visitor information. You will see on there that as a US citizen, you do not need a visa to visit Canada for up to six months. So long as you have a passport with you, you will have no trouble getting into or out of Canada. I hope you have a great trip!

all depends on what you would like to see... Vancouver is amazing and well worth the trip, as is Vancouver Island - a 1.5 hour ferry ride from Vancouver and the island has fun cities to hang out in like Victoria... But if you're from like the East Coast of the US that's a huge road trip... Canada is a flipping huge country... much larger than the good ol' USA. Niagara falls is only about 7 hour drive from NYC and well worth it! The area around Niagara falls is amazing... Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City are all amazing cities worth a visit and are all with in a few hours of the US-Canadian border... As for travel docs... you can get by with just your passport without any hassle... But a couple of things to consider... how long a drive are you in for? the Toronto to Vancouver road trip take about hmmm... 40 hours of straight driving... it's awesome cuz you see a huge chunk of Canada but it takes forever.. If you throw out some more detail we can suggest the best places to go.. like what state you leaving from? and how long do you wanna be gone for?

Nightlife? Um ... I visited Vancouver for a long weekend 15 yrs ago. It was indeed a beautiful city with great people, but I swear there was nothing to do after 9 PM. Nothing. We couldn't even find a movie theater with a 10 PM show. The only food we could find came from a Chinese grocery store. I'm not kidding. We were staying in downtown Vancouver and to this day I wonder what the hell was going on. Was there really nothing--literally NOTHING--open after 9 PM or were we just in some shut-down area of the city somehow? It was weird. Almost postnuclear ghost town weird. It was like the sidewalks had been rolled up.

Passport is what you need to cross the border. A visa is required for passports from countries other than the US. A driver's licence to drive in Canada. Vancouver is on the other side of the real Canada. The real Canada starts in Windsor, Ontario (across the river from Detroit, MI) to Montreal in Quebec. Other than that, age of majority (drinking age) is above 19. And the rest is like the US.
