How much should paying for over staying?

Staying in Canada for a little while, have a few questions on paying customs?

  • I'm staying in Canada for a little under 6 months. And I'm carrying on my laptop with me (Greyhound) when I get to the border will I have to pay duty on it? I also have some clothing I'm putting in my carry on as well and shipping some instead of having it checked on the greyhound, I'm scared of lost luggage and stuff. Will I have to pay duty on that as well? (Going via USPS). Thanks in advance and any other tips would be welcomed.

  • Answer:

No you shouldn't have to pay any duty on your computer or anything else. What you should do though is register the serial number with the customs service of whatever country you're from. That way you can prove that it was yours when you left the country. Your issue isn't so much worrying about having to pay duty on personal items you bring into Canada but rather proving that you owned those items when you left your home country.
