Do Canadians think U.S. healthcare reform was warranted?

According to this article, http://financiallyfit.yahoo.com/finance/article-110806-6784-1-five-quick-ways-to-bankrupt-yourself?ywaad=ad0035&nc Reason #2 for bankruptcy in USA is unanticipated medical bills due to illness. Here's what the excerpt says on the link: 2. Assuming Insurance Will Cover Your Medical Bills So, maybe you budget. You make an allowance for food, clothes, beer. But do you have an allowance for medical costs? Here's why you should: The No. 1 cause of bankruptcy is medical bills. Harvard researchers found that 62 percent of all bankruptcies are caused by medical bills. Even more disturbing: 78 percent of those were people who had insurance. "Things happen. Surprises happen," Kothari said. "And people don't prepare for the unexpected. They don't have a mindset of, 'How do I prepare myself for the unexpected?'" Of course, the best medicine is to not get sick. .... So doesn't this indicate a serious problem when 78% of people with medical insurance STILL go bankrupt from getting ill? And the amount of out of pocket cost of health insurance has no upper limit? Do Canadians think this indicates correctly that U.S. healthcare reform by Obama was a step in the right direction?

We have always been sorry for Americans.

You may find this hard to believe, but most Canadians are not in the least concerned about the US health care system - or lack thereof. Canadians have a perfectly workable system, which the US is free to copy. In the meantime, Canada is more focussed on stimulating the economy, screening Tamil immigrants (or would-be immigrants) and coping with the HST.

Eric, I don't think we really care, we have our own issues. The American people make their own decisions when they vote. By the way, it's Tommy Douglas, not Douglass Once again, thank you for your continued interest.....

I dont' think most of us really care... as long as we have helath insurance travelling in the US that's fine by most of us. Obviously most Canadians champion public health systems.... we do find it funny that Americans skew the facts to a degree where it's borderline lying about our system. I wish they would just keep the debate to themselves and not pull us into their mess. But, as Steve Harper has said on many occassions while travelling int he US: "This is a Provincial responsibility, and I am at no liberty to pull the country into this debate."

They think that the Republicans in the Senate were objectionable obstructionists which resulted in poor legislation as it did not include the Public Option.

Why would you ask someone who is not Americans?
So doesn't this indicate a serious problem when 78% of people with medical insurance STILL go bankrupt from getting ill? And the amount of out of pocket cost of health insurance has no upper limit? The above is not true. You misinterpreted this. 78% of people with insurance do not go bankrupt. Maybe 1% of people ever go bankrupt. By your own statement, 62% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills and of those, 78% were insured. Which means that maybe 0.5% of the people experience a bankruptcy due to medical reasons even though they were insured. As for the second statement about there being no limit, I just came back to Canada after 10 years in LA and my US medical insurance always had an annual cap of about $3000 in out of pocket expenses and most of the time there was no lifetime maximum of what they would pay. In my last two years in the USA, after I paid my $1500 annual deductible, my gall bladder and my cataract surgery were fully covered by Kaiser Permanante. Maybe some people have bad insurance? As for how Canadians feel about the US medical reform that passed, we feel it is a mere gutted shell of a reform that was messed over by so many committees that it is about 1/10 of the amount of reform that was needed. It barely scratched the surface of the reform the US medical system requires. In the meantime, things will get more expensive until Kaiser Permanente takes over the entire US medical system. And while people in the US cannot wait to get onto medicare, a government run socialized single payer system.
