Why can't Canada host talks with North Korea?

  • North Korea is facing a misunderstanding with South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia, and the United Nations. Whatever the circumstances that led to this now, even if you wanna blame the Korean War, nobody could predict 50 years ago what is happening now. But North Korea would listen to Canada since Canada is well respected in the world and always has been. Why can't Canada have diplomatic talks with North Korea?

    If Canada wants to host or mediate discussions between North Korea and the U.S., I see no disadvantage to Canada. However, that would probably amount to hosting an empty room if the U.S. and North Korea don't go for the idea. Canada theoretically could make its own arrangements with North Korea. The U.S. would not exactly prohibit that, but the U.S. is likely to become uncooperative with Canada about something in response. I don't think North Korea has enough to offer Canada to make that a net advantage. I don't know if there is much internal political demand for the Canadian government to give the idea much consideration. Washington and Ottawa don't absolutely have to agree with each other, but it can make life easier when they do. (Well, usually. I suppose some in Canada would say it can be a net disadvantage to go along with something stupid, which sometimes seems like our leading export.)

I missed living during the reigns of tyrants like Hitler and Mussolini but have heard about them constantly in the past 64 years that I have graced this planet. I HAVE lived through tyrants like Idi Amin, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, and Mao and for the three years I lived in South Africa I lived within spitting distance of Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe. Of course there are many others but the one thing they all seem to have in common is pure selfishness, pure evil thoughts and behaviour and the unwillingness to talk sense with anyone at all. While I have the greatest regard for our Canadian diplomats and peacekeepers, I do not honestly think that tyrants of this order would listen to them any more than they have listened to anyone else. Kim's only interest is Kim. And anything any Canadian could possibly say would land on deaf ears - listening to anyone outside of North Korea regardless of who or where they are from is not in Kim's interest - all his interests being selfish and evil. I would think China would stand a better chance of getting through to him just based on the huge Chinese population they could mobilize against him - if they chose to squash him, I have no doubt they could. But he ticked them off with his recent nuclear games and he couldn't care less apparently. Nope! Kim is one of those horses you can lead to the diplomatic watering trough (but probably not) but he'll never be made to drink. Now if we could slip a black mamba between his sheets - ahhhh but I fantasize again!!

Canada is still not North Korea, only N.Korea is accepted by N.Korea sound %&*&^#$ well that's the way it is

Canada is about as far from N. Korea as one can get. There is no advantage for canada to do any negotiations. We have never done it before, no sense of us doing it now. We would only antagonize them. We would rather let a sleeping dog lie. Let Obama do it.
