Do you need your passport to visit Canada and back to us?

I am a US green card holder, do i need my passport with me to visit Canada?

  • Because my passport is going to expire in August. Is green card the only thing I need to cross the border? Or I need to have my passport with me? Is it ok to have an expiring passport with me? My nationality does not require me to obtain a visa.

  • Answer:

Green Card is fine, but you should take your passport with you to be on the safe side. It should be alright with the expiration in August to still gain entrance to Canada and then back into the US.

You only need youtrgreen card to go to Canada and re-enter the U.S. Since the green card is what gets you back into the U.S., it is what is required to enter Canada. a foreign passport will not gain re-entry into the U.S., so you simply do not need it for the trip.

You can get into Canada. You will have grief getting back into the USA. Really, you should renew your passport starting right now.

Chuckles

You need a passport book, passport card, enhanced driver's license, NEXUS card or FAST pass. For more details, see http://getyouhome.gov/.
