Why is Canada requiring passports at US-Canada border?
-
If the USA were not requiring Canadians to present passports for border crossing, would Canada not require Americans to use it? Seriously, I'm an American and I think it is absurd that my country is requiring Canadians to get passports to cross the border. I didn't ask my country to pass this, it's not gonna reduce terrorism because any terrorist would be the first person to get one. Security may even be tighter without the passport requirement because then there is more room for interrogation. I don't agree with the new policy, do you?

Answer:
It's all part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. After 9/11 the United States instituted a graduated passport requirement for all individuals entering the United States. This morphed into the WHTA. Even American citizens require a valid US passport in order to re-enter the United States if travelling via air. As of June 1/09 ANYBODY, regardless of nationality (including Americans MUST have a valid passport to get into the USA. As such it only makes sense that Canadian authorities are going to require you to show a passport. If they let you into Canada without one, we're stuck with you because you won't be able to get home again. Disagree? Contact your congressman.

It is not a Canadian initiative actually, it's a US initiative. As of this summer the US is requiring all persons who enter the US by land, including Canadians, to have a valid passport. They are already requiring all who fly into the US to have passports and have been for some time now. Essentially, the only reason why Canada is requiring people to have passports when they ENTER Canada is so that we know that they a passport with them to get BACK into the US. If we didn't check and make sure people had passports coming into Canada then a lot of US citizens or others would be stuck here because they couldn't get back into the US. So, while we don't like it either, if someone is to be blamed then look at the US Government first. If they didn't require it to get into the US then Canada wouldn't have had to change it's rules too and things would carry on as before.

the real "fun" begins when you realize that it is your country which requires YOU to show a passport for coming back home. bet you didn't know this? having grown up in an environment where I had a passport since I was 14 years of age, I cannot get excited about this requirement; it's like renewing any other document periodically. I do agree, while Europe is removing barriers, we have nothing better to do than to erect some more. this unfortunate 9/11 event surely has caused a lot of trouble, and still is. and many politicians misuse some of the "fallout laws" to create jobs for their constituents, no matter if it makes sense or not. for a while I thought we could have an Northamerican Union (similar to the EU), but this seems to slip further back now, as everyone is falling back to protecting the weak in their own country. look at the new duty on lumber (10 % - see link below)

It is unfortunate. Most of Europe is leaning towards removing boarders and making trade easier, while the US and Canada make it increasingly difficult for trade and tourism.

Since the US and Canada have put in national security provisions at the boarder, our countries have not been attacked. Meanwhile in Europe, England, Spain, France, Turkey and Germany, along with Australia have all had terrorist attacks in their countries. It is better to side on with security rather than having your friends and relatives get blown up. Check to see what the criteria is in the Middle East going from boarder to boarder, and you will be happy to see it is only a passport you need. How many attacks are acceptable to you?

It's because of terrorism. Soon we'll all have to show passports everywhere. It's pretty sad, I agree.
