What can I Bring in to Canada?

What foods can u bring from US into Canada DUTY-FREE? Help ASAP!!!!!?

  • I live in Canada, and I'm going to go shopping in the US tomorrow. I want to know what foods you can bring across the Canadian border DUTY-FREE when I come back. Can you bring fruit juice/pop? How much meat, dairy products, and eggs per person? Seafood? Canned Products like peanut butter? Nuts and Candy?? What about fruits/veggies? I'm crossing from Sumas/Huntington, BTW DON'T GIVE ME A LINK TO THE BORDER WEBSITE. THAT DOESN'T HELP!!!!

  • Answer:

My parents and my mother-in-law head across the border to grocery shop all the time. They have never had a problem coming back to Canada with any items they have purchased as long as it didn't include tobacco products or alcohol. Other then that, shop away.

They usually won't say much at the border if you have 20 or maybe 25 dollars worth(at least where I live)..there is no "duty-free" exemption for groceries per se. However-there are a few things you have to watch-and they are very strict about these things, don't bring any of the following back: Beef-including steaks, roasts etc and any "unprocessed beef",including hamburger. No pet foods-wet or dry, doesn't matter. Any vegetables or produce(including apples etc.) that ORIGINATED outside of the US (Canada has import restrictions on some central American countries that the US doesn't-make sure all produce is packaged /stickered "Grown in USA".(There are also restrictions on some produce from some western states-including California) Avoid bringing potatoes over no matter where they originate(yes you can buy US grown potatoes in your local grocery store at times but those individual growers have to be certified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency) All the other stuff you mentioned ..including dairy, fish, poultry, pork, eggs, junk food ,pop, canned stuff is all OK as far as I know. The below poster should read their link;the only amounts of dairy products restricted are amounts over 20 kg.-most people don't buy 50 pounds of cheese at a time...

The list is here: http://www.beaware.gc.ca/english/brirape.shtml Don't bring back milk, cheese and beef, and also avoid fresh fruits and vegetables.
