How fast can I learn to drive?

I am wondering how I can learn to drive in New Brunswick and how much the process costs?

  • I am Irish, living in Ireland but planning to but a house in a village in New Brunswick that isn't on a bus/train route. I don't drive, never had but if I want to get this house (great price and it's nice) I would have to learn. I wouldn't be moving fully to Canada for a few years, buying in advance. Here in Ireland there is a big backlog of people wanting to learn to drive, I'd be waiting ages! Could I fly to Canada and over a 2 or 3 week period learn to drive, get my licence etc? Can non-residents get a New Brunswick driving licence? I have no idea maybe someone will know? I could also purchase the house while I'm there (kill two birds with one stone) and with my licence hire a rental car to visit the property etc. But how would insurance work then? If I don't have a car can I get a rental? Do I need to have my own insurance to hire a rental car or can I hire a rental without my own insurance? Hope I haven't complicated it too much, any answers more than welcome! Thanks

  • Answer:

In order to get a full driver's license, you have to be either a student or permanent resident in Canada....if I were you, I would take all the necessary driving courses in Ireland then get a full Irish driver's license and apply for an international driving permit before departing from Ireland

Pretty involved question so without possibly giving you the wrong answer, search Government of New Brunswick, Canada. On their website, you will find links to Motor Vehicles to answer your question about getting a drivers license. You will also find other links dealing with foreign ownership of land. As far as renting a car, you will need a valid license and you purchase insurance through the rental agency, it is part of the rental agreement. I live 45 minutes NE of Moncton and could easily give you driving lessons, I have had a 30plus year career trucking, over 3,000,000 accident free miles over the years and could help you with that but I think you have to have a learner's permit for a month before you can take the actual test for a permanent license but I am not sure as they change requirements all the time but the link to Motor Vehicles will have that info.
