Cheapest Way from NYC to Montreal?

  • I would like to visit montreal for a few days. Can someone tell me what is the cheapest way to get there? And does it save you more money if you book it earlier like when you book flights earlier? I checked online and it seems like amtrak is really cheap. Its $62 for one way and the train ride is about 11 hours. The only negative is it only has one starting time from NYC which is 8am and then you get to Montreal at aroudn 715pm. But does anyone know how long it would take after checking through the border control people? I checked greyhound bus and it seemed like the bus costs even more than amtrak. I assume taking a flight there is not a good idea right if i want to save money? Seems it cost about $200 each way after taxes. I do plan to leave Montreal in 2-3 days.

    If the train you looked up says $62 then that`s pretty good. You would spend more than that in gas if you drive. Of course you could always hitchhike

Take a bus. Airlines take forever with all the checks. Take a bus to Burlington, Vermont and you will see one of the prettiest states ever. Then a bus to Montreal because our roads were made 200 years ago and are as really bad now. The bus stop here is in what we call Old Montreal and the best place in the world for fine dining, two great univeristies, and several super museums. I recommend Hotel Bourbon, about 7 or 10 blocks away, which is a gay hotel, but nobody will care if you are straight, It's clean and under $40 and the restaurant downstairs has the best American southern-style food this far north. Wanna save money? Keep all sales receipts. Your hotel will give you a card that when you return to the USA, you can mail to Ottawa and you will get a cheque for all your taxes back, even the hotel tax.
