How do I exchange foreign currency to US dollars?

Currency exchange from us to canadian dollars question?

  • Hi, I will be going to Montreal this winter- I have travelers cheques in US dollars- where would I be able to exchange these (to Canadian currency) for a good rate? Which banks or currency exchange places offer good exchange rates? And if I were to exchange these in a bank, will I have to open an account with the Canadian bank? Or do I just drop by and ask the teller to exchange it? How would I go about to make such exchange? I'm asking a lot of questions (sorry!) but I want to be prepared and make the most of this holiday! Its my first time traveling to Montreal, and help will be very much appreciated! Thanks.

  • Answer:

No mater where you get your money exchanged you will get boned on the exchange rate. It has nothing to do with where you get the money exchanged its just the process (that's why Jesus kicked them out of the temple). Any bank or credit union or casse popular should be able to cash your traveler's cheques without too much problem just bring lots of ID. You shouldn't have to open an account to cash your cheques. I've cashed traveler's cheques in several countries at banks and even hotel front desks without any problems. BTW if you can get your traveler's cheques in Canadian dollars you can spend them like cash in most stores without getting boned on the exchange rate. Have a good trip and safe home.

You'll get the best rate by leaving your U.S. dollars in your bank account at home and using your ATM card to get Canadian dollars from a cash machine in Montreal. There may be a service charge for using the machine, but it will be less than the exchange fee at a bank branch.
