What is the difference in the salary of different teachers?

Teachers: Why is there such a big salary difference between Alberta and the other provinces?

  • Alberta's minimum is 43,653 while British Columbia's is 37,908 (I'm from outside Canada and was just curious)

  • Answer:

The boom market for oil and natural gas has put a lot of money in people's pockets in Alberta. With money to spend, prices have climbed accordingly. To be able to afford to live in the urban areas like Edmonton and Calgary (or the resort areas like Banff and Jasper) the teacher has to make a salray that is commensurate with the cost of living. Therefore salaries are somewhat higher than elsewhere in the country.

The cost of living is very high in Alberta. Especially in Calgary, Fort MacMurray and surrounding areas. When your housing prices are exceedingly high you need to be able to pay your teachers (or any workers) a wage that will help them afford that or everyone will just quit and leave the province.
