Is Scotland a country or a state?

Why is Canada a "country" and not a "unitary state"?

  • Like for example, The United Kingdom (UK) is NOT a country. It operates just like one. It is comprised of the "countries" of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, correct? So I don't understand why 'Lower Canada' and 'Upper Canada' could not have become separate countries in a Unitary state like the UK under the same capital of Ottawa? And then as new territories became added to the Unitary State of "Canada" they would either join Upper Canada or Lower Canada, or become New countries joined to the Unitary State of Canada. Then also the aboriginal peoples would each get their own country joined to Canada. Also, if Canada was suppose to be a 'Confederation' .....in the US that was a term of the South in the Civil War to have practically different nations for states agreeing to self-government entirely (states' rights) under the ONLY alliance being Common Military Defense. Also when exactly did Canada become officially "a country" in 1867 it was in form not a country. It's confusing. It's very confusing, because there's all these quasi-countries like United Kingdom, but the British Commonwealth is also one and it includes Canada still (HEad of State), why can't Canada be one also and Quebec be a country then?

  • Answer:

the Commonwealth is a club of countries that have a common heritage (Britain) they operate much like the UN it is not a country or any other quasi governmental organisation. In the case of the UK and the old Union of Soviet Socialist Republics they were made up of places that were countries (or kingdoms) before unification. In Canada's case confederation was amongst colonies in spite or to spite Quebec was NEVER a separate nation they were just another colony. Actually Canada was a dominion (what ever that means) until about 1982 ish when the constitution was brought to Canada. The UK has a central government in London and for several hundred years and has only recently devolved some power to the individual units that comprise the UK.

The country of Canada is made up of something called Confederation. Confederation consists of 10 provinces and 3 territories. It is the preferred system.

It is this way because our ancestors in charge decided it would be this way. It was a compromise that was done that way because it was easy and made sense at the time. And since then no one has been suffuciently motivated to change it since Pierre Eliot Trudeau brought the Canadian Constitution home from England around 1981. And that is when Canada became a truely independent country. We accept it as it is because it works as well as any other country works.

Canada is too large, geographically to be a unitary state. The UK can fit into ONE Canadian province. Because of this, a federation of provinces and territories, similar to the US was used, so many government functions are under the jurisdiction of a government governing a smaller area.

Because they need more people asking themselves the same question. It is a state's choice what it wants to be...usually there are a lot of historical issues involved, but Canada is just like Canada wanted Canada to be. I recommend that you try to think of a question with a more useful answer.

Canada was created by joining together a number of colonies. For historical reasons they did not want to merge into a unity state. Quebec especially, wanted its borders to stay in place. Canada is a very big place. It would be hard to govern as a unity state.

Canada is actually a Dominion not a country or a unified state.

before 1960, there are many votes that potician decide which name to name this country they has idea like - Canada - Albion Albionoria—"Albion of the north" Borealia – from 'borealis', the Latin word for 'northern'; compare with Australia Cabotia – in honour of Italian explorer John Cabot, who explored the eastern coast of Canada for England Colonia Efisga—an acronym of "English, French, Irish, Scottish, German, Aboriginal" Hochelaga – an old name for Montreal Laurentia Mesopelagia—"land between the seas" Norland Superior Tuponia—derived from 'The United Provinces of North America' Transatlantica Ursalia—"place of bears" Vesperia—"land of the evening star" Victorialand – in honour of Queen Victoria in the end, they pick Canada, you heard no complain from me and why canada is a country because since canadian want to unite land that stretch from ocean to ocean, so they need to take rest of the province and unite them together so America can't take them.
