Where to get this phone in canada?

As a US citizen travelling in Canada, is it better/cheaper to use my us at&t cell phone or get a phone here?

  • Any other suggestions for best ways to get cell phone access? At&t charges .79 to .59 per minute for Canada usage it seems. Are there disposable phones/sim cards available for use in Canada?

    7-Eleven has disposable phones and reasonable rates ($0.25 per minute), but you do have to buy the phone from them to get the SIM card. 7-Eleven SpeakOut has a promotion running until the end of September: if you buy $100 of airtime you get the phone for half-price. The cheapest phones they offer are the Nokia 1208 and 1661. Also, if you buy $75 or $100 of airtime you get an effective rate of $0.20/minute (this is not a promotion - they just give you $93.75 or $125 credit). If you don't want to buy a phone from them, you may be able to buy a 7-Eleven SIM card via the forum at http://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/phone-exchange/page-1/ Petro-Canada offers services similar to 7-Eleven but I haven't used them. 7/11 has "disposable" phones however I've never stopped to check out the costs or anything for them. Rogers has a pay as you go option with inexpensive phones http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wirelessBuyFlow?forwardTo=PhoneThenPlan&productType=normal&N=52+11+4294948623 as do others so you may wish to check them out.
