Is cyprus vegan friendly?

Is Canada vegan-friendly?

  • I am vegan and currently live in Wisconsin, and I'm planning on moving to Canada when I graduate college. I don't really know much about the food industry in Canada, and I was wondering, is it anywhere near as vegan friendly as America is? Living in America I feel I have NO problem in terms of groceries, and there's a pretty good selection of vegan restaurants/stores in the city I live in.. I specifically want to move to Montreal. Can anyone tell me about how vegan-friendly Canada (Montreal) is in terms of shopping and eating out?

  • Answer:

Living in a large city like Montreal is your best bet for vegan-friendly food. Smaller cities might not have as much choice in terms of restaurants, however all grocery stores have a decent vegan selection. Welcome to Canada :)

You should have no problem finding fresh fruit and vegetables in Montreal and plenty of specialty store. The one problem that you might have is with immigration, if you ever want to become a landed immigrant. As you know, French is the primary and working language in Quebec (Montreal) and they control their own immigration policy. They demand that you have a very good knowledge of French and French Canadian customs and culture. It is rumored that one of the new immigration tests will be to have new Quebecois be able to consume an entire 14 inch Tortiere in less than 10 minutes. This is a traditional French Canadian meat pie...so you might have a problem. Additionally, I have heard rumors that they are going to revert to the traditional Torte, which is actually a small bird..so if you are a bird lover then you might want to reconsider! Welcome to Canada EH!

It will be about the same as the US. If you're in a larger city like Montreal , you'll find no problems with grocery selection or with restaurant choice. You might have some trouble in a much smaller place, especially with the restaurant part. But that's the least of your worries. First find out how to immigrate.

There are numerous vegn restaurants and vegan speciality products available in grocery stores across the country. You would have no problem whatsoever.

Canadians actually do eat seal meat - I used to see it in the grocery stores when I lived in Newfoundland, but.... Cities would be the best choice. I lived in Ottawa, and there were at least 2 places that specialized in vegan cooking. This was for an area population of about 1 million. I'm not sure about Montreal specifically, but as a large city, it should be possible. I now live in the Yukon, and not eating meat here would be seen as very odd. The native people here have adapted over thousands of years to eat meat as a primary source of nutrients - that is how they get their vitamins for example. They cannot process other foods like you could, and would become ill if they did not eat meat. So, a vegan would have a tough time up here, although I did meet one in a restaurant last week, who had an extremely difficult time finding something she could eat. So, cities - probably. Rural areas - extremely unlikely.

I really fail to understand how come people, especially Americans, think we live that much more differently they they do. Seal meat is not our main staple and grains are not outlawed. If you can buy it there, order it there...then you can get it here.

Unless you make a big deal about your food choices, no body here will care what you eat. Read the menu, place your order, eat the food, Leave. How hard is that ? Jim B. Toronto.

You can find everything in the grocery stores just like in the US.
