POLL: what should USA rename itself to remove "America" from its country name?

  • Canadians, pretend the UN has given orders that USA shall remove "America" from its country name so that the name "American" can be used to refer to all people of the continent (all 3 Americas) and end the confusion with yanks. Let's also remove "United States" because what kind of country has 2 words (let alone 3, right?) to their name. So to reflect your good opinion of USA, what should the new country name be from now on? Feel free to let your imagination run wild and give it a good name you see appropriate. ;o) Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), the best one gets the BA!!!

    lighten up Kreos. The poster is just having a little fun. A far as the UK goes, the proper name is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Not that it's particularly important from the point of view of answering this question. On a personal level, I believe that the name "The United States of America" is a little pretentious. After all, that country makes up about 40% of North America, and none of Central or South America. Perhaps a good new name would be "The United States of the Southern 40% of North America plus Hawaii and Alaska". (It's getting way too long if you include Puerto Rico and the other US territories. Or maybe just shorten it to TUSSNAHA. There you go, Tussnaha. That's the new name.

Thats a big "pretend" because the UN would never order such a thing nor does it have the authority. Secondly, I still fail to see why there is any confusion over the use of the work "America" in the country's name. The world is well aware of who is who. And if you really want to get technical, there are more countries then Canada, the US and Mexico that are part of North America. Officially there are 23 sovereign states and dependent territories in North America so if you wish to re-examine your question (its correctness AND relevance) please feel free to do so.

There's plenty of countries that have multiple words for their name. There's the United Kingdom, the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of China (informally known as Taiwan), the Kingdom of Thailand, the Commonwealth of Australia, the Republic of Columbia, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea just to name a few. In fact, multiple names for a country is the more the norm than anything. I find your pretend situation difficult to comprehend. For one, the United Nations doesn't have the authority to tell a nation to change its name. Also, why should the USA suddenly change its name after 240 years of having it? Personally, I think it's fine the way it is and the name makes sense. They literally are united states of America. They're states, in America, who united to form one nation. I really see no point in them changing their name now. It suits them just fine. Also, Canada used to be knows as the Dominion of Canada. EDIT: Actually, the official name is the United Kingdom. Scotland and England are akin to Canadian provinces. Sure, the USSR collapsed but care to try and explain the rest of them?
