Can you enter Canada from the US with a green card?

Requirements to Enter Canada for Green Card Holder?

  • Hello, I cannot seem to find this answer anywhere. My fiance and I plan to go to Victoria Canada this year in November. I am a US Citizen and have my passport. However, my fiance is from Nicaragua and has a permanent resident card issued to him by the United States. He also has an up to date Nicaraguan passport. Does he need to apply for a Visa to enter Canada, even if he holds a green card?

  • Answer:

If your fiance has a US Permanent Resident (green) card, that is all he needs to get into Canada. If he tries to travel using his Nicaraguan passport, he will need to apply and pay for a temporary resident visa from Canada, but would not need one if he shows the green card to Canada Border Services. Here's the proof. Click on the URL below and look for the section called Required Identification for Non-Canadians. http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/security-securite/admiss-eng.html#s1 And when he returns home, US Border Protection is going to want to see his paperwork then too. Again, he would show the green card to be admitted back into USA. That is according to the US Get You Home website: http://www.getyouhome.gov/html/lang_eng/eng_sa.html

Green card holders use their green card to get into Canada or back into the US the same way US citizens use a passport. getyouhome.gov has all that info and it has links to the Canadian Border Services Agency..
