How can I enter Canada?

How can Canadians allow Geo Bush to enter Canada and give a speech, when Amnesty International?

  • is calling for his arrest on war crimes ?How could you allow this to happen ? The Bush people were despicable and took us all into a perpetual state of war not to mention caused the global financial crisis. The arrest warrant was called for by Amnesty International who are against torture, imprisonment without due process of law and targeted assassinations overseas by the U.S. military and CIA.

  • Answer:

While I am not a Bush fan (father was ok, but not fond of the son), Canada is not the country who is responsible for arresting him at this time. I am no expert in United Nations articles of law, but it seems to me that a case must be brought before a human rights tribunal at the UN, and there must be sufficient evidence to issue an indictment and international arrest warrant. Once that is done, the person can be arrested and extradited to face a court proceeding on human rights violations. Look at the case of former president of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, Mr. Goran Hadzic. He was indicted by the UN in 2004 of war crimes committed in Croatia between 1991 and 1992. He was finally captured in 2011, and in July was facing a war crimes tribunal to answer for what he did. If the United Nations were to indict George Bush on war crimes, then it would be Canada's duty to arrest and extradite the former president if he ever set foot on Canadian soil. But that has not happened yet. You mentioned imprisonment without due process. Arresting him before any official indictment or charges are file at the UN would only cause an international incident, and probably violate international law with regards to foreign dignitaries and diplomats. It is certainly with Canada's right to refuse Bush entry to Canada, and they could do that if they wanted to make a statement about his track record of allegedly allowing torture techniques to happen and even approving them at GitMo and/or Abu Gharib. But diplomatic relations are a tricky situation, and every action usually has an equal or greater reaction.

Let me ask this--Why does Amnesty International want Canada to stick it's neck out and arrest George Bush. Ill tell you why because they can't do anything about it in the USA and they think Canada should be the scape goat. Can you imagine the deep doo doo Canada would be in if they arrested a former US president. This is not Canada's fight--it is between Amnesty International and the USA. If some university wants to bring him here that's their right but I don't think he'd get many listeners Bush did not drag us into the Afghan war. That came about because of 9/11 and terrorism and it had to be done. Bush did not drag us into the Iraq war because we saw no need for that war.

Amnesty International has no authority and can call for what ever arrest they want. So they called for a warrant. Under what authority? Find me a Canadian law that he broke and for which any Canadian court has jurisdiction to issue a warrant. There isn't one and they can't. All AI is doing is looking for headlines to further their own cause. And since you dragged Afghanistan into the discussion....just which roto did you serve on? It must not have been one of the two that I did because I didn't see you there. Since you were not there you have NO ability to pass judgement on what we achieved there so do us all a favour and keep your generalizations to yourself. I know first hand, as to most of those I served with, the good that was achieved and the difference we made. I'd go back again tomorrow if asked, without reservation.

You really think Canada would create a big international incident and ruffle the feathers of the U.S by doing that?! come on. If he was arrested we'd never hear the end of it especially on U.S. late night tv and radio they'd go on and on and on about how evil and bad those Canadians are and wouldn't shut up.

Bush has broken no Canadian laws, and therefore, there is nothing to arrest him for. And, as he is also not a criminal in his own country, he is fully admissible into Canada.

Take care of your own problems. Remember, you elected him -- twice.

What legal grounds would they have to deny him entry?

Bush was here giving a speech? Can't say that is of any interest to me, which is likely why it went in one ear and out the other, if I did know about it. If I wanted to listen to a monkey, I would go to a zoo.

Bush would have diplomatic immunity so it really doesn't matter what Amnesty International thinks!!

AI would have to go through a legal process with United Nations Security Council and the judicial department with the Geneva Conventions Commission to validate their arrest warrant in Canada or any UN member country. Although they are in the process of doing this, it isn't completed yet. Be patient, Bush Jr's day in court is coming. And he will be punished accordingly.
