Homeless Americans in Canada ?
-
Are there homeless Americans in Montreal, Toronto or other cities in Canada ? I hear that a lot of liberal Americans left the US for Canada and many have had a hard time finding work, housing due to their illegal status. So how do these homeless Americans in Canada survive ? What do they eat ? Where do they go for shelter ?

Answer:
A few facts about Americans in Canada. The vast majority of the Americans who have applied to come to Canada, as immigrants have been highly educated, and they were able to secure employment in Canada within 3 or 4 months of arrival. I live in Toronto, and my personal contacts in the Police and the EMS services haven't said anything about this type of thing, to me. The Toronto news papers have not done any stories about it, either. I'd be inclined to say that this is a "non story ". Be aware that our Canadian Border Security Agency does a much stricter inspection of individual Americans, who arrive at our border now. Any one who doesn't appear to have a specific destination in Canada, and sufficient funds to support themselves while here, will be denied entry to Canada. That happens every day of the week at our border crossings. Americans cannot simply " drive up to Canada and stay ". There is a legal process, that has to be followed, and it is designed to make sure that those who are accepted, will be able to support themselves in Canada, by working and contributing to our economy, thru their taxes. If they would have moved to Canada legally, they probably wouldn't have so much trouble. But. What they probably do: sleep in their vehicles, eat whatever they can get (they probably steal **** or eat from a dumpster behind a restaurant) and beg for money. i don't think its fair that every ones deporting mexicans for coming to USA illegally, while some Americans are doing the same to canada.

How odd. I presume this is some sort of joke. I was under the impression that it would be relatively easy for well educated liberal Americans to find their way through the emigration process and get good jobs.

"I hear that a lot of liberal Americans left the US for Canada" Not that I have heard anything about in recent history. It DID happen during the Vietnam War but that is a long time ago. Are you possibly hearing about that and assuming it is current news which I suppose you could if whoever mentioned it failed to mention the Vietnam War? In those days, the Canada/US Border was a lot more open than it is today and a lot easier to cross. If I were an American wanting to get out and I had no means of support in a new country, I think I would head for one that does not have cold winters and where what money I do have is worth a lot more - I would probably head for Mexico or Central America or even South America before Canada. It's possible I suppose but I think it is unlikely. The odd person might get lost between the cracks but "A lot" is not a very likely scenario.

Unless they were really resourseful they probably went home.

unlike the US those here illegally have a heck of a time finding a job as they have no Social Insurance Number (SIN). Without a social insurance number no employers will hire them as the employer cannot deduct the wages paid them as an expense on their taxes without giving the taxman a social insurance number for the employee. As well you cannot open a bank account with out SIN so I would imagine its a pretty tough grind for them. Most of the homeless in Canada are in fact mentally ill folks who were dispersed into "community care", promptly stopped taking their meds and now wander the streets babbling incoherently
