Will Canadian stores still take US Dollars EQUAL to Canadian Dollars this summer?

• For simplicity, a lot of stores since July of last year have been accepting US Dollars and Canadian Dollars in equal amounts. But recently the Canadian dollar got stronger than the US Dollar. Are stores starting to adjust for the weaker dollar? As an American, should I get my US dollars turned into Canadian dollars now to hedge the risk of losing more value. I'm planning to go to Canada this summer. Or should I count on the 1-1 exchange rate in most shops?

  No doubt, unless the respective currencies change quite a bit before your visit, it will be much the same as it is now--some stores in busy tourist area will accept $US at par, some will not, and in smaller places they'll charge you more than your bank would to exchange. Since these things can change day by day by a penny or less, it doesn't make sense to plan ahead. Just go with what it is when you travel. Have some travellers' cheques or cash in case you can't find a bank machine(though they're everywhere--Canadians are probably still the world's heaviest users of debit cards), and just go with the flow on the exchange rate. Have a credit card--they will charge you the going rate on the day you use it.
