If a person is both american and canadian do they need a passport to get into canada?

Also if a person is canadian and has a green card because they are living in america do they need a passport to get back into canada? BTW: This is just for visiting not living there

Answer:
After June 1 - yes. If you have dual citizenship, you should carry the passport of the country where you are residing. So if you live in San Francisco for example but are a Canadian and and America citizen, carry your American passport. If you live in Calgary but have both American and Canadian passports, carry your Canadian passport. Or you can call Tel.: 1-800-267-6788 (in Canada and the U.S.) or 613-944-6788 (Ottawa) like I just did and get the same answer and the answers to any other questions you have on this subject. Canadian citizens with American green cards need to carry both their passport and their greencard. Hope this helps. Edit: Oh! Loyalist. Time to join the rest of us in the 21st century. I don't know about anyone else, but I am a Canadian, not a colonist.

If a person has dual-citizenship (American/Canadian) they will need a passport of the country they live in, effective June 1st, 2009 to return to Canada. Otherwise birth-certificate is okay until then, unless you're flying into Canada, in which case you need your passport. If you are a Canadian living and working in the USA, that does not necessarily make you a citizen of the USA. I think you have to have American citizenship before you can claim to be American.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as being "both" American and Canadian. You cannot be both Loyalist and Patriot.
