What is the worst city in ontario?

I'm moving from Ireland to Canada soon. Anybody know what London, Ontario is like as a city?

  • 5 stars to the person who can tell me if its possible to get a bus into St Thomas, Ontario from London, Ontario!

  • Answer:

London is a pretty enough city. It is the home of the University of Western Ontario. At one point, in the 70's or 80's, it was home to the highest percentage population of millionaires in North America. I used to ride with the London Hunt, and I sometimes use London as an example of a city that still (??? as of when I last lived there, that is) has a proper country club with affiliated hunt club. (That may have changed since then, though.) (I've lived all over the world, with my last move being my 33rd. Old-fashioned country clubs have been taken over by golf courses.) No stars for me because I looked at all the usual suspects, and there doesn't seem to be public transportation to St. Thomas (unless you consider chartering a small plane or hiring a cab from London to be "public transportation"). There is public transportation within St. Thomas, apparently. In Southwestern Ontario, you'd typically look for routes offered by Greyhound Bus Lines or VIA Rail. Even Robert Q can sometimes get you where you need to go, as long as it's on their route to an airport. But none of these services offer St. Thomas as a destination. GO (Government of Ontario) train and bus service also doesn't extend that far west of Toronto, either. Sorry. Renting a car from London is probably your best bet. I will say that the 2-hour drive from Toronto may become tedious, if you find you're doing that often. A friend of mine recently moved back to London and I just can't bring myself to drive there (even though my cottage is a 6-hour drive from my home). There's just "something" about London I don't like. And a 2-hour road trip only further discourages me. On the other hand, you're only about 2 hours' drive away from Windsor and Detroit, Michigan. When you want to fly anywhere, you'll likely have to depart from either Toronto or Detroit. (So that's an extra two hours of travel time.) In any event, I lived in London on two, separate occasions for about 2.5 years each, about 25-30 years ago. I didn't really care for it, myself. I'm a city girl, and it's just too small and conservative for me. The population is around half a million, nowadays. (Back then it was only 250,000.) But if you're looking for a more laid back, but still urban, lifestyle, then London is a decent choice.
