Do you need a return ticket to enter the U.S Border?

you only need a ticket if youre "flying' out..im from canada and travel often by car or plane to Us)but now days..they all have it on computer so if u have ure passport..u give ure name..and they should have u on there, if u have bought one(u cn always ask for the ticket at the airport)..if nt u cn drive(only passport required) back or take a bus..but i dnt know how that works..cus u said u havnt got a ticket yet.. to go back??..(did u cme by plane and u going back by car-u said the border-or u came by car and going back by car?) I got a litle confused there...

In short, yes. They can and will give you a hard time about going to the US, if they don't believe you have sufficient ties to Canada. If you are going by car, you shouldn't have a problem, as thats considered a means of return. When going through to the US don't tell them you don't know when you are returning, as that will send up red flags. Tell them that you are coming back in a month and will purchase your ticket on-line when its closer to the time you'll be leaving. You still may have trouble getting into the US and may be issued a visitors visa that will limit your stay. If you can, I would buy a return ticket to be on the safe side, and make the return dates flexible. Good luck!

If you are flying then yes the airlines usuall want to sell a return ticket, it is their policy. However if travelling by car, no you do not need a return ticket, fact is you don't need a ticket of any kind. You do not say what citizenship you are...if you are Canadian, and have a clean record you are allowed to go over the border for 6 months at a time...
