Im planning a road trip starting in Canada...?
-
Hello everyone, I live in Los Angeles and Im planning to start a road trip heading north through Oregon, Washington, stop at Seattle and Vancouver, from Vancouver head to Edmonton from there go to Toronto and finally to the Niagara Falls, from there cross the border to Buffalo and head to New York City. From New York City all the way down the east coast to Miami and then hit the road back home through the southern part of the country. I drive a 96 dodge ram V8 5.2, how much is the prediction in gas and regular expenses? also how long would of be from Vancouver to Edmonton and from Edmonton to the Niagara Falls? Thank You

Answer:
LA to Vancouver is 1,276 mi - about 21 hours 37 mins. Pretty much a straight run up I-5. Vancouver to Edmonton is 721 mi - about 13 hours 43 mins. You'll be taking the northern route, through Kamloops and Jasper. Edmonton to Toronto is 2,153 mi - about 1 day 14 hours. This is via the southern (US route). I'd recommend this one since it is shorter and western Ontario is a longer boring route, plus gas is a lot more expensive. Total distance about 4150 miles and about 7 days worth of driving (at 10 hours per day). With an older v8 truck, you'd be lucky to get 15mpg so expect something like 275 gallons so something like up to $1250-$1400 in gas depending how much of it you get in the US. Maybe a few hundred more for the northern route to Toronto. Add another $700 in hotels and $350 or so in meals. Say $2500 not including shopping or costs within each of those cities. Say another three days and $1200 to get home. Finally.... remember to have proper vehicle insurance, a road-side assistance plan, and, if you are doing this during the winter, snow tires, chains, a winter emergency kit, a spare cell phone, sleeping bags, etc.

Gas is running at around $1.20 a litre right now in much of Canada and a US gallon is 3.79 litres, making the price of gas in Canada, from your point of view, around $4.50 a gallon. I have no idea what kind of highway mileage your truck gets. You can find gas prices almost anywhere in North America on gasbuddy.com I'd call it a comfortable 2 day drive to Edmonton from Vancouver. There may be people who can tackle it in one long day. I'm not one of them. It would be 4 very long driving days to Niagara Falls from Edmonton. I'd suggest taking at least six days, if you want to do more than sleep and drive along the way. Our Canadian highway system doesn't even begin to compare with the US interstates and you will find many of it two lanes only, not divided, so it's slightly more demanding(and slower) driving crossing Canada compared to crossing the US. You can get distance calculations for many places in Canada from this site. http://distancecalculator.globefeed.com/Canada_Distance_Calculator.asp On some distance calculators if you enter, say Edmonton to Niagara, the calculator will give you the shortest route which might be through the US. To get around that, use Thunder Bay, at the head of Lake Superior, as a midway point. Calculate from Edmonton to Thunder Bay, then Thunder Bay to Niagara. That way the calculator has to take you through Canada.

Vancouver to Edmonton would be 2 days, at least, if you don't stop to see anything. Edmonton to Niagara Falls: probably at least 3 days, again, if you don't stop to see anything. Gas is more expensive in Canada, which is weird, because Canada is the biggest exporter of gas to the USA, but, you pay less for it than we do! I was in Edmonton in September, and they were paying about $1.04 a litre. BC would be more, and in the mountain areas between Kamloops and Edmonton, a lot more. Pity you couldn't take your time. There is so much to see and do along the way....

No idea about gas, probably quite a bit! Not sure what your truck is like on gas. Vancouver to Edmonton is a 12-13 hour drive. Depending on road conditions of course. Edmonton to Niagra Falls is a long drive! You're probably looking at a day and a half of solid driving. Not exactly sure because again, you never know what kind of road conditions you may come upon. But I'd predict about 37 or 38 hours. Canada is a very large country! Take a while to drive across it. It is very beautiful though :)

For heaven's sake don't cross back into the USA at Buffalo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Continue on to Montreal; one of the best, interesting and pleasant cosmopolitan cities in North America and go to NYC from there (a much more attractive drive to NYC, anyway, as you will go through the edge of the Adirondack Mountains).

Keep in mind that most of Canada has no "interstate" type highways; it's all a two-lane highway that is rather indirect and bendy...plus there may be long distances without any towns; just trees and lakes! That means you won't be getting your optimal highway mileage, plus gas is usually more expensive in Canada (except Diesel, which is cheaper). Also, the Canadian Dollar is current stronger than the US Dollar, so you will lose some money in the conversion. All that to say that for the same distance, you will end up spending more in gas than you would in the US. I'd suggest you put your route into Yahoo Maps to see the total distance, check your truck's owner's manual for the estimated fuel efficiency rating, and assume about US $5 per gallon. (More likely will be around $4.20-$4.80, but using $5 should give you a more accurate estimate of the actual cost...it will be cheapest in Alberta, and more expensive in Ontario, especially right in Greater Toronto).
