How often can I enter Canada on my visitors visa in any given period?
-
I have a 5 year visitors visa to Canada - at present, I am visiting and will be staying for the full 6 months, leaving in November. My partner and I are planning to marry however this does not look likely before the November deadline - we know we can apply for an ext to my visitors visa however even after the ext, I might still need to leave - does anyone know whether there are any restrictions on the number of visits (and duration) to Canada during a 12 month period - also, when does the 12 month period begin - is it from date of first visit entry or does it run for a calendar year ie January to December. Further to this, if we are able to be wed before my 6-month stay is up in November, will I be able to stay in the country and apply for residency or will I have to leave to my home country and apply from there?

Answer:
You cannot change status on a visitor's visa. Go home and apply from there. Six months in, six months out.

A "Canadian Temporary Resident Visa" is used by foreign visitors coming to Canada for a short period of time, who are expected to leave the country before their visa expires. It cannot be converted to a permanent resident visa, and is not allowed to be used to try and stay to live and work here. Every person interesting in immigrating to Canada must do so from their country of origin. In other words, you would apply at the Canadian embassy or consulate in your home country, not from within Canada. Marrying a Canadian does not immediately grant you citizenship. Your partner would need to apply to sponsor you through spousal immigration. And you would still need to go through an extensive criminal, medical, and background screening process. It can be a frustratingly long process, which is why it is not a surprise that some people try to bypass or break the rules. However, I must warn you...if you try that and are caught, you will be deported and effectively end any chance of being accepted into Canada in the future. That would put quite a damper on this blossoming relationship and potential marriage. Probably a good idea if you were to consult with the nearest Canada Immigration location or communicate with the embassy in your home country, to get more details if considering this move. They may be able to offer some tips or guidance on the proper approach, and what you can or cannot do while waiting for the approval to go through.
