Why is Canada's Thanksgiving different from the USA?

Do Canadians know today is Thanksgiving in USA?

  • it means we are off work/School and eating Turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie, shrimp cocktail, everybody with family It is like Canada's mid-October Thanksgiving Also the Detroit Lions are playing the Green Bay Packers NFL, big game And Dallas Cowboys against Miami Dolphins. How much do Canadians partake in the US Thanksgiving events? Including New York City's Macy Day Parade?

  • Answer:

Yes most of us know because of all the US stations we get here in Canada. I'm sure there will be a lot of Canadian NFL fans enjoying the games today and a lot of stores are holding 'US Black Friday' sales tomorrow. Not sure how popular the Macy's parade is, but I have seen it a few times. Also, I hope you're having some veggies with all that pie.....=)

Canadians observe American Thanksgiving as much as Americans celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving.

Canada and the US each has its own Thanksgiving Day. Same name, nearly identical meals, but held for very different historical reasons. Canada: "The history of Thanksgiving in Canada can be traced back to the 1578 voyage of Martin Frobisher from England in search of the Northwest Passage." Link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_%28Canada%29 The US: "The modern Thanksgiving holiday traces its origins from a 1621 celebration at the Plymouth Plantation, where the Plymouth settlers held a harvest feast after a successful growing season." Link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_%28United_States%29 We honestly have no need or desire to celebrate Thanksgiving twice. It's not like Americans celebrate ours in October, either. For Canadians, November = Remembrance Day - http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/11/11/remembrance-day.html It's a solemn month of the year, not one for celebrating foreign holidays.

Thanksgiving day in the US? Really? No, it can't be. I'm sure from all of the TV ads that it is a national day of shopping. A celebration of capitalism and greed.

Canadians have their Thanksgiving in October. That's because the growing season is shorter up here, and that is when we typically hold our "harvest" celebration. But yes, Canadians know that US Thanksgiving is in November. They may not all know the exact date, but it's hard to miss. In Canada, we get ABC, CBS, NBC, and other US channels, and they are ALL playing advertisements about the Thanksgiving holiday and Black Friday. Do we participate? I'm sure some do, but not everyone. Many of us who deal with American customers may take this as a long weekend or even go down to the States for the big sales.

Yes, most Canadians are well aware of American Thanksgiving. It's talked about on the American TV we watch, referenced in American books and movies, affects our film opening dates (I just realized it actually makes sense for the new Muppet movie to open on a Wednesday). But we already had our Thanksgiving a month ago so we do not observe this one and we don't get the time off either. We just watch it drift by on our American produced calendars like we do Arbor Day and Columbus Day.

Of course we do. We get more US pop culture than Canadian most of the time. I don't watch US parades...hell, since my kid lost interest in Santa, I don't even watch Canadian parades. My dad was an NFL fan, but not me, CFL all the way. Go Bombers Go!!

Yes, most Canadians know more about the US than lots of Americans do. I once met a man in Las Vegas who thought Alaska was a country.

Duh, we're not stupid
