American Moving To Canada?
-
I'm not from Canada, but the people I've met in Toronto, Vancouver, Cornwall, Hamilton, and Montreal seem to be very friendly and there seems to be some positives such as clubs that play music other than pop/hip-hop, guys that don't mistaken "grinding" for dancing, higher wages, less expensive education (I know higher taxes), more opportunities, etc. Anyway, I want to move to a city or a town near a city where I can feel safe and talk with intelligent and friendly people. I currently live in a small town where the people are friendly, but they are very close-minded as well. I tried moving to DC and Seattle, but those people were quite rude, arrogant, and would not open up to someone who was trying to create friends (Seattle is infamously known for the "Seattle freeze") and there was always the constant fear of being shot at night. I'm a black belt, but sadly we're not bullet-proof (though I think we should be, LOL). So, I'm thinking about maybe trying to move to Canada. Montreal seems wonderful, but I don't speak fluent French (English and some Spanish). I know Toronto can be a little rude when it comes to crossing the streets, but the people for the most part seem friendly when I met them, and Vancouver seems to be booming in the media business which is what I want to do (not necessarily acting/directing, more like stage managing or PR/Advertising). I have a Bachelors degree and I'm currently working on my Masters and just started a job in Marketing this past month. I'm going to wait a while before deciding to move (6 months to a year) but I need to ask a few questions: Now, I was with friends when I went to Toronto and Cornwall (very small town I know), and part of the time in Montreal, but are the people in Toronto, Vancouver, etc. friendly and willing to make new friends? Which cities would you recommend to someone looking for media/marketing/PR work who wants to hang out with nice but intelligent people, go to clubs that don't play just pop/hip-hop, and doesn't have an amazingly high crime rate? Also, is it true that it is EXTREMELY hard for people born outside of Canada to get a job? Any tips on how an American can get a job in Canada? Seriously, Canada is one of my favorite travel locations b/c of the intelligent and friendly people. I've lived in England but I know it's too expensive for me to think about moving there and trying to get a job. I love America, but there's very little opportunties in the small towns and the large cities are full of crime and obnoxiously rude and arrogant people. I can handle some rudeness, but it just sickened me to see little kids complain that their blackberries were the wrong shade or that people often don't get together for drinks or spend time with friends after work b/c they don't talk to other people.

American's getting a job up here isn't hard. I f you're smart you shouldn't have any trouble also it's all about personality. For what you are looking for I recommend Vancouver, its house prices are high but the suburbs around it are nice and peaceful and usually not too expensive. Its not as big of a city as Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal but alot less Violent and people are generally nice. Vancouver is growing at an insane rate and Surrey(the suburb just outside of it is one of the top 3 largest city's in north America...its huge. Around it you can find great city's like Langley, Cloverdale or coquitlem. White Rock is the nicest place in surrey with nice little houses and great life. The night life in Vancouver is alright...not as good as In Ontario but still pretty decent. My cousin is quite a large actor in Vancouver so if you want some indepth info about the support you can get here just give me a shout. And you don't need to speek french to live in Quebec alot of people don't but you end up learning french through osmosis Good luck in your search for a better life in Canada eh?

You seem to have lost the question in there. Ah, found one. You better have a job lined up before moving there. It will make getting a work visa much easier. Unemployment is up in Canada right now too making it harder to get a work permit.

You clearly don't make an effort since DC's NORTHwest area is the safest area, being where ALL of the buildings of any importance are located (White House, World Bank, national museums, Capitol, FED, et al). I'm skeptical to trust that you'd even been out of your apartment in DC if you hadn't noticed this. EDIT: It's not lame criticism. If you don't know the most fundamental aspect of safety in DC (that northwest is the safe area, not south), then you haven't gotten around. I suspect this is another case of a socially awkward person thinking they can just move to another country and automatically become interesting to people around them. Most move to Japan or Canada from the US. Indeed this claim of yours says it all: "people often don't get together for drinks or spend time with friends after work b/c they don't talk to other people." Sorry to break it to you, but people in USA talk to other people, get together for drinks, etc. If you don't see it, you're either not trying or you have some social handicap. I would recommend you examine whether or not the whole of USA is boring so much as YOU may be boring. No offence.

Hi. I lived in Toronto for three years and I would never move back. I'm near Windsor now (population just over 200,000) and it is much friendlier and less hectic here. I am out in the country and there are 4 little towns all around and 15 minutes to Windsor, 30 minutes to Detroit. Toronto and Vancouver people seem to have the attitude that they are better than everyone else and are not liked elsewhere. They also have some of the highest crime rates in Canada. Montreal is friendly but can be a problem if you don't speak fluent French. Some of the suburbs of all 3 cities are worth a look. Whatever you decide, good luck!
