Answer:
Some people want "certain cars" and are willing to pay whatever it costs to get one...some Japanese models aren't/were never available in Canada. As long as these vehicles meet Canadian safety standards (which most Japanese vehicles do) then there's nothing to stop people from importing them-there is a kicker though-they have to be AT LEAST 15 years old.Once a vehicle reaches 15 years old in Japan by law there you pretty much have to get rid of it.Japan has a very strict automotive inspection policy that require cars be inspected every 2 years(once they're 3 years old) and any mechanical issues repaired-most places in Canada don't have this-in most provinces a vehicle only has to be inspected when it's sold to someone else.Only New Brunswick and PEI have mandatory annual mechanical and body inspections. So what happens is - Japanese people are willing to sell off their "old" cars dirt cheap because it's cheaper to get a new one than to fix up "a bunch of little things: to keep them on the road.Bear in mind new vehicles in Japan don't have to be inspected until they are 3 years old-and an inspection there can cost over 30 000 yen (around 400$) In some -probably most cases a 15 year old Japanese is probably in better mechanical condition than a Canadian vehicle that's maybe 5 or 6 years old. There are several companies that specialize in importing such vehicles from not only Japan-but places in Europe as well.
