In Canada would I be able to use my Student Card as valid ID?

  • If you live in Canada please help!! I'm going over to BC next May from UK. I don't want to take my passport out as I don't know what the area is like. I don't have any form of driving license and I'm not willing to pay £50 for one as I don't want to drive yet. The student card has my date of birth and photo on. Thanks for any help!!

  • Answer:

You cannot use a student ID for identification. It is too easy for someone to generate fake IDs nowadays so only government-issued identification is usually accepted. To get on any international flight to Canada, you will need to show your passport (or other valid travel document) as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative that Canada signed with USA. If you want to rent a car, you will need to show a valid UK driver's license or international driver's permit. If you want to get into a club or bar that serves alcohol, you must show a valid photo ID that shows your birthdate....such as driver's license, passport, government healthcare card, etc. So if you plan to go out drinking here in Canada or want to buy tobacco, your best bet is to bring the passport along, and just make sure that you have a safe place to keep it so it does not get lost or stolen. Canada is a pretty safe place, and it is unlikely that someone would try to steal your passport from you. But it is possible for it to slip out of your pocket while you are dancing, sitting on a bar stool, or walking around town. If you don't want to take the risk of losing it and the hassle of getting a replacement, perhaps you can check if you can get an alternate piece of ID. For example, are you coming from the Greater Manchester area? If so, you may be able to get a UK national identity card. Those are £30. http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/passports-and-immigration/id-cards/ Another option may be a Citizencard. They are only £10 but can be used as proof of age in UK. They may not be familiar with this card at all bars and stores in Canada, but if you combine that with perhaps another ID you have in your wallet, it goes a long way to proving who you are and your legal age. http://www.citizencard.com/about.php By the way, so you know the rules in BC, they are supposed to ask for two pieces of ID before they sell you any alcohol or tobacco. A report published in July 2009 by the Liquor Control Board of BC shows 29% of all merchants surveyed required two pieces of ID, and 35% required at least one piece of ID. There was 36% that did not request any form of ID from the person buying alcohol. Bars can lose their liquor license if they sell alcohol to minors, so they will pretty much do their best to card people who appear to be under a certain age. Some places even have a sign indicating they card EVERYONE who looks like they are under 25.

No, a student ID will not do for a valid ID. You will have to carry your passport around as a valid form of identification. If you are worried about loosing your passport you could buy a passport carrier to protect it. But in Canada there will be no worry about getting your passport stolen.

Probably not. But you don't have to worry about taking out your passport. Just make sure you have a safe pocket to keep it in. Canada is a pretty safe country and as a traveller, you should just take reasonable precautions - not flashing wads of money, etc. Enjoy your visit.

You will require your passport to enter Canada. After that, you will require government issued ID for identification. This can include a driver's lisence, health card (issued from the NHS), or some sort of social security card. Very few places will require identification. You will probably only need it if you intend to consume alcohol, if you are flying domestically, or if you are trying to obtain a student discount (in which case your student ID will suffice). Note, it is illegal in many provinces for companies to request a health card as a form of identification. If you volunteer the card, however, it can be accepted. In practice, most establishments (restaurants, bars, clubs) are familiar only with passports and driver's liscences as ID. British Columbia is very safe but be cautious and use common sense. Vancouver is just as secure as London, UK if not more.

I'm assuming that you are looking at the drinking laws and ID required for that. I believe that the age is 19 in BC and as long as you look of age there should be a problem. However if you look younger than your age then expect to be carded. There is no way around it you need government issued ID with your picture on it.

No, a student I.D card is not government issued, and therefore (unfortunately) will not be accepted while entering Canada. I'm not too sure if it will work in the United Kingdom, but I know for sure that it will not work here in Canada.

No you need Govt issued identiification and wont get into Canada with just a student card either, you will need a passport to enter Canada from overseas. You wont be allowed on to your flight without one

Only government issued photo ID is accepted. That's why, whether you want to drive or not, getting a drivers license is essential.
