Can Canada make a unilateral decision to stay out of a war that the UK is involved in?
-
Or, since Canada has Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, must Canada always join the UK in war to fight for "Queen and Country"?
-
Answer:
The UK and Canada are totally separate countries. They no longer have any legal connections, beyond treates like NATO, etc., same as Canada has with many countries. The UK Queen, and the Canadian Queen are two totally distinct, and separate things. They just happen to be the same person. But, the Crowns are separate - e.g., if the UK became a republic, the Queen would still be Queen of Canada. The UK cannot compel Canada to do anything, and, vice verso. You are correct, there are close ties by treaties and such, and, the Queen has to authorize war in both cases, but, as in the UK, the Queen of Canada cannot compel us to go to war without the approval of Parliament.

Oh for pete's sake. How many times do you have to be told Canada is independent! The Queen can't even order Britain to do anything without causing a major constitutional crisis, why would she be allowed to order an independent country to do something. When was the last time the Queen issued a real command? She's a figurehead.

THREE Canadian monarchy questions in one day? You're a busy little troll, aren't you? Anyway, sorry to break it to you but you're out of touch with reality by nearly a century. The Balfour Declaration and Statute of Westminster made all Commonwealth Realms independent of each other, equal to each other, with none subservient to any other. That's why the Realms' personal union with the monarchy is that: personal. And you can't sit there pretending you didn't already know that when it's been explained to you before time and again.

Yep. Canada stayed out of the Iraq & Falklands war. Check out the Statute of Westminster (1931). That will explain much.

Canada chooses where they go to war, If the UK says tomorrow we are invading Brazil, Canada can choose if it wants to participate or not, Canada is independent.
