How do I gain a Croatian Citizenship?

Am I able to gain dual citizenship with Canada?

  • I am a born American and have lived here all my life. My boyfriend is Canadian. I am looking to move to Vancouver (where he lives) on either a work or study visa. Marriage certainly a possibility, although not right away of course since we have only been dating ten months. But if I was to marry him, would I gain dual citizenship in both the US and Canada? Or will I lose my US citizenship? Is there any way that I could gain citizenship to Canada without losing my US citizenship?

  • Answer:

You are confusing a number of things........... In order to enter Canada, you must apply for and receive a work permit, that is for a specific period of time, and for working at a specific place and for a specific employer. Being married to a Canadian citizen does NOT give you either immigration status in Canada OR Canadian citizenship. In order to qualify to apply for Canadian citizenship, you must FIRST have been approved for Permanent Resident status, and then live and work in Canada for at least 3 years, then you can apply to be considered for citizenship . So to review..........A temp work permit is for a limited period of time, and at then end of it, you must leave Canada. Applying for Permanent Resident status takes longer and you must have specific educational and work skills that are in demand in Canada, and it is NOT a automatic process. Once you are a PR card holder, you have to live in canada for 3 years, and then you can apply for citizenship. Many people are citizens of BOTH the USA and Canada. Did you know that right now, there are three US State Governors who were born in CANADA ? True fact. here is a link to the Canadian Immigration information website. READ it very carefully, please. There is a movement afoot in the Canadian parliament to end dual citizenship; people will be required to decide which citizenship they want to embrace.
